(In Plain English — and From a Designer who’s seen it all)

When it comes to dressing your windows, it’s completely normal to feel torn between off-the-shelf options and investing in made-to-measure.

Quite honestly, they both have their place — but they offer very different outcomes. In my view, understanding those differences can help you choose what’s right for your home, your lifestyle and your budget.

At Haysey Designs, I’ve helped so many clients navigate this decision — not just based on cost, but on how they actually want their home to feel every single day.

Here’s my designer breakdown just for you.

Off-the-Shelf Blinds and Curtains

Off-the-shelf options are the quickest and easiest route. You’ll find them in most home stores or online, in standard sizes, colours and designs. They’re great when you need something fast, you’re working to a tighter budget, or the window isn’t the star of the show.

They work especially well for:

  • Spare rooms
  • Rentals
  • Quick refreshes
  • Spaces where “good enough” genuinely is good enough

But here’s the bit many people don’t realise, most homes don’t actually have standard-sized windows. So while the price and convenience can be appealing, they often don’t hang quite right or give that polished, intentional feel.

Pros

  • Budget-friendly
  • Easy to buy and install
  • Ideal for temporary or secondary spaces

Cons

  • Limited sizes, fabrics and finishes
  • Often a compromise on fit
  • Typically less durable and less luxurious (you sacrifice that full look you get from interlined options).
  • Sometimes you can spend just as much trying to tick all the boxes
  • You have to have the headings for curtains or the thickness of the blind pleats as they come (inevitably usually standard pencil pleat tops or eyelets or narrow folds, not what actually suits your space, your style and what you really would like to have – annoying!)

Made-to-Measure Blinds and Curtains

Made-to-measure is where you get that “finished” look — the one people notice even if they can’t quite put their finger on why the room feels so calm, balanced and expensive.

Every detail is tailored:

  • Exact measurements
  • Perfect proportions
  • Your choice of fabric, lining, header, pole, trim and finish
  • A colour and texture that works with your room, not the room you wish you had

As designers, this is why we love made-to-measure. It’s the quality, the precision, the longevity — and the joy of pairing the right fabric with the right light and the right room. It’s the difference between “that’ll do” and “that’s exactly what I wanted. If your windows are an unusual size, if you’re sensitive to light, if you want curtains that fall beautifully or blinds that sit flawlessly inside a recess — this option delivers every time.

Pros

  • Perfect fit, every time
  • Wide choice of fabrics, colours and styles
  • Superior quality and craftsmanship
  • A cohesive, luxurious finish
  • Adds long-term value

Cons

  • Higher upfront investment
  • Longer lead time

Which Option Is Right for You?

It all comes down to your priorities.

Choose off-the-shelf if you:

  • Need something quickly
  • Are dressing a secondary or short-term space
  • Don’t mind a bit of compromise

Choose made-to-measure if you:

  • Want a look that truly elevates your room
  • Prefer high-quality, long-lasting finishes
  • Have non-standard windows
  • Care about the details (fit, fall, fullness, light control, lining, colour and texture)

If you’re unsure, remember that even small differences in fabric choice, fullness and fit can completely change the feel of a room. That’s why I guide clients through this all the time — balancing practicality, beauty and budget so the end result feels effortless and perfectly “you”.
