Let’s be real, bookshelves are often one of the first things people notice in a room. Whether it’s in your living room, office or even a quiet corner in the hallway, they’re not just for stacking books. They’re a brilliant chance to show off your style, your story, and yes — your secret obsession with vases.
The good news? You don’t need a degree in styling or a trolley full of props to make them look amazing. You just need a few clever tricks and a little bit of confidence.
Here’s how I style shelves for clients — and how you can do it too.
1. Mix Books with Objects That Mean Something
Your shelves should feel lived in, not like a set from a catalogue. Try mixing books with bits you love: a ceramic from your travels, a framed photo, a quirky candle holder or even that weird-but-wonderful sculpture your mate once gave you.
Nic’s Tip: Try a “book–object–book” rhythm across your shelf to keep the eye moving naturally.
2. Switch Up the Stacking
Stand some books upright, but lay others flat in stacks. Those horizontal piles? Perfect for adding height and giving your little treasures a pedestal moment.
Think of it as layering, not lining up.
3. Give It Some Breathing Room
This is not a game of bookshelf Tetris. Leaving some empty space is what helps the shelf feel intentional and calm — not like you were just trying to make everything fit.
4. Use Colour (Loosely)
Don’t panic — I’m not telling you to rainbow order your entire library (unless you secretly love that sort of thing). But loosely grouping similar colours together or echoing the colour of an accessory across the shelf can really pull it all together.
Bonus tip: Use a consistent tone, like warm neutrals or soft greens, to tie things together visually without everything being matchy-matchy.
5. Bring in a Bit of Green
Plants bring shelves to life. Literally. Even just a small trailing ivy or a cute little succulent can break up the hard lines and add some softness. Fresh flowers in a small bud vase work beautifully too.
6. Think in Balance, Not Symmetry
Big chunky items need a buddy — not necessarily one the same size, but maybe a small grouping to balance it out visually. Vary the height and scale of items as you go to keep things interesting, but don’t let one side feel heavier than the other.
What’s the Point of All This?
Your shelves should feel like you. Not like you’re trying to be someone else’s Pinterest board.
They can hold your memories, spark conversation, and make you smile every time you walk past. And if you’re still staring at your shelves wondering where to begin — we’ve all been there — you don’t have to do it solo.
Book a design consultation and we’ll get everything looking gorgeously styled and beautifully “you” in no time.
