Pinterest is a treasure trove of design inspiration and when used intentionally, it can be an incredibly powerful tool to help you visualise your dream home.
But, with endless pins, mood boards and aesthetic trends flooding your feed, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, indecisive, or completely unsure of where to begin.
At Haysey Designs, we guide clients through this process with clarity and purpose.
Here’s how to make the most of Pinterest while staying focused, inspired and in control of your design direction:
1. Start with a Clear Vision
Before diving into pins and boards, take a moment to reflect on what you truly want from your space. Are you drawn to light, airy interiors? Do you prefer bold colours or soft neutrals? Consider how you want your home to feel, not just how you want it to look.
Pro Tip: Write down 3–5 key words that describe your ideal home atmosphere e.g. “calm”, “textured”, “elegant”. Use these as a filter when pinning. Try your best to stay on track and not go down a rabbit hole here, restrict yourself to choosing up to 10 of your most liked images as a maximum for this step.
2. Create Separate Boards by Room or Function
Avoid the “everything in one place” trap. Break your inspiration down into categories – such as Living Room, Home Office, Kitchen Ideas, or even Lighting Inspiration. This makes your ideas easier to organise and review when it’s time to make real-world decisions.
3. Pin with Purpose, Not Perfection
Don’t worry about making your boards ‘aesthetic’ – focus on saving images that speak to you, even if they don’t all match. For this stage, take each board, and look for recurring items such as particular textures, colours, layouts, furnishings, lighting, window dressings or materials that keep showing up. These are clues to your true design style.
4. Edit Ruthlessly
After a pinning session, revisit your boards and remove anything that no longer resonates. We want no more than 3 images in these boards that speak the loudest or if you really need to stretch this to four, notes beneath the images to identify either what is missing that need to be there (e.g. from other images you’ve seen) and note what you most love about each image in the board. This helps refine your vision and avoid conflicting ideas. Less visual noise = more clarity.
5. Look Beyond the Obvious
Instead of only pinning “Pinterest-perfect” images, dig into the details – like a specific type of joinery, a beautiful fabric swatch, or a clever layout solution. The magic is often in the small, intentional choices.
6. Don’t DIY Everything
Pinterest is fantastic for inspiration, but not everything you see is practical – or realistic – and often, lighting has been enhanced or tweaked blowing out colours to an entirely different tone or feel. There will be differing levels of styling or joinery and you may need some assistance discovering easily, what things cost so you can align your ideal project investment with your vision and most loved ideas.
That’s where we come in. At Haysey Designs, we take your Pinterest dreams and turn them into a grounded, beautiful reality, tailored to your lifestyle and home.

Using Pinterest with intention will empower you to better understand your personal style and communicate your ideas clearly with your designer.
