You know that feeling when you walk into a room and it just feels right? It’s interesting. Layered. Personal. Like it didn’t all get ordered off one website last Tuesday.
Well, the secret to that magic?
Mixing styles — and doing it well.
This is something I love helping clients with — blending the old and the new, the sleek with the soulful, the pieces they’ve collected over time with a few things that make the whole room sing.
But mixing styles can feel a bit scary, especially if you’re worried about ending up with a space that looks like a car boot sale collided with a showroom. So here are my go-to tips to help you nail the look confidently — and yes, there’s at least one thing you can do immediately to get started.
1. Pick Your Colours First (Yes, First!)
Before you even think about sofas or lamps or that dreamy vintage mirror on Facebook Marketplace, settle on your colour palette.
Whether you’re into soft earth tones, moody blues, or warm neutrals, pick 3–5 shades and stick with them across the room. This will be your secret weapon for making everything feel intentional — even when the pieces come from totally different eras.
Quick win: Go and grab a few things from around your home that match your chosen palette. Try styling them together in one spot — instant harmony.
2. Balance Old with New
There’s something irresistible about a modern sofa sitting next to a battered old trunk, or a clean-lined dining table paired with antique chairs. It adds story.
Don’t be afraid to contrast. It stops the space feeling too staged or flat — like real life, but elevated.
3. Repeat Yourself (In a Good Way)
This is the trick that stops things from feeling like a jumble sale: repetition.
If you’ve got a modern black metal coffee table, consider echoing that finish in a picture frame or a light fitting. A bit of brass on a vintage cabinet? Add a matching lamp or mirror frame elsewhere.
It creates rhythm — and rhythm = calm, even if your styles are dancing around a bit.
4. Let One Style Lead the Way
Think of it like cooking. One main flavour, a few delicious supporting acts.
So if your vibe is mainly Mid-century modern with a few rustic touches, let MCM take the lead. That way your space still feels grounded, not confused.
5. Mix Up Textures & Scales
You need contrast to stop a room feeling like it’s been copy-pasted.
Pair a velvet chair with a rough linen cushion. Put a chunky rustic coffee table next to a fine-legged accent chair. Varying texture and scale adds depth and keeps the eye moving.
Quick win: Go into your living room and see if everything’s about the same height, weight and feel. If it is, switch one thing up – add a textured throw or swap in a different shaped vase.
6. Trust Your Gut (and Have a Bit of Fun)
If it makes you smile every time you walk past it, it belongs.
This is your space. There are design rules for a reason — and sometimes those reasons are boring. If you love something, find a way to make it work.
