Living in a smaller home or flat doesn’t mean compromising on style or comfort.
In fact, compact spaces can often feel the most thoughtfully curated when designed with intention. At Haysey Designs, we specialise in transforming small spaces into beautifully functional environments that reflect your lifestyle and personality.
Here are our some of our best tips for making the most out of every square inch:
1. Choose Multi-Functional Furniture
Smart furniture choices are essential. Look for pieces that offer dual functionality – such as a sofa bed, a storage ottoman, or a coffee table with hidden compartments. A fold-out dining table or a desk that doubles as a dressing table is ideal for maximising flexibility without cluttering the space.
Design Tip: Opt for bespoke joinery where possible. A custom-built bench seat with integrated storage or a wardrobe that wraps around a doorway can make brilliant use of awkward spaces.
2. Utilise Vertical Space
Think beyond the floor plan – walls are often underused assets in a small home.
Tall shelving units that use the space all the way to the ceiling, wall-mounted lighting and built in storage solutions can dramatically increase your room’s capacity without encroaching on floor space.
Design Tip: Floor-to-ceiling curtains or tall bookcases draw the eye upward, creating the illusion of a higher ceiling and all so much luxury and spaciousness to a room.
3. Keep the Colour Palette Light and Cohesive
Lighter shades reflect more light and make a room feel more open. Soft whites, warm neutrals and gentle pastels work beautifully in small spaces. A unified or tonal colour scheme across walls, furniture and décor helps to avoid visual fragmentation.
Design Tip: Add warmth and texture with natural materials and textures. Think linens, rattan and opt for lighter wood tones where you can.
4. Maximise Natural Light
Natural light is one of your most valuable design tools in a compact space. Avoid heavy, thick and low level (in window) window dressings that block daylight; instead, opt for sheer fabrics or simple blinds that allow the light to filter through. Hang the blinds on the outside of the window higher up to evelate the space or if you do go for curtains, ensure the pole is wide enough to draw them back sufficiently to allow the light in and so that they merely soften the room at the edges.
Design Tip: Position mirrors strategically (not opposite a window but adjacently). This works wonders to help reflect light and give the impression of a larger, airier room.
5. Declutter and Curate
In small spaces, clutter accumulates quickly – and can feel overwhelming. Keep surfaces clear, clean and décor very intentional. For example the often seen 3 book stack topped with an ornament or small vase. Use stylish baskets, built-in cabinetry and concealed storage to maintain a sense of calm and order.
Design Tip: Follow the “one in, one out” rule – when you bring something new into the home, consider letting go of something else to maintain balance.
6. Scale Furniture to Fit the Space
Oversized furniture can overwhelm a room. Choose pieces that are appropriately scaled to the rest of your space, with clean lines and exposed legs to allow for visual flow and a generally lighter feel. Modular furniture can be a great choice for flexibility and ease of rearrangement.
Design Tip: Rugs can help define zones within a room. Choose one large enough to anchor the furniture, which can make the space feel more cohesive and intentional. By anchor – we mean that the chair legs sit on top of the rug, including the armchairs or occasional pieces. Bigger is better when it comes to rugs for that polished look.
7. Integrate Built-In Solutions
Built-in shelving, screens, desks, or banquettes save valuable space and can be tailored to your exact needs. They also add a sense of permanence and style that freestanding furniture may not achieve.
Design Tip: In open-plan areas, built-ins can help subtly divide zones while maintaining an airy, open feel.
