Start with a Foundation: Begin by selecting a set of high-quality, well-coordinated cushions that complement your sofa and overall interior style. Consider the size and shape of your sofa and opt for a mix of different cushion sizes, such as square, rectangular, and bolsters. A foundation of cushions in neutral colours or subtle patterns provides a versatile base for adding pops of colour and texture.

Play with Sizes and Shapes: To create visual interest, experiment with a variety of cushion sizes and shapes. Layer larger cushions at the back of the sofa as anchors, followed by medium-sized cushions, and finally, smaller ones at the front. This layering technique adds depth and dimension to your cushion arrangement.

Mix Patterns and Textures: Introduce visual intrigue by combining cushions with different patterns and textures. Play with a mix of solid colours, self-pattern prints, florals, stripes, or textured fabrics. However, ensure there is a sense of harmony by sticking to a cohesive colour palette or theme. Remember, the goal is to create a visually pleasing balance rather than strict symmetry. The best way to achieve this when you are starting out is trial and error. 

Play with Proportions: Consider the proportions of your sofa and cushions when styling. If you have a large sofa, use bigger cushions to fill the space adequately. On the other hand, if you have a smaller sofa, opt for smaller cushions that won’t overwhelm the seating area. Keep in mind that proportionate sizing helps achieve a harmonious and well-balanced look.

Incorporate Bolsters or Lumbar Cushions: Add an element of comfort and style by incorporating bolsters or lumbar cushions. These long, cylindrical or rectangular cushions can be placed at the ends or in the centre of the sofa to provide extra support and a visually appealing focal point. Choose fabrics and patterns that complement the rest of your cushion selection for a cohesive look.

Judo chop those cushions.  Place the square or rectangular cushions on their base and judo chop them right in the centre, this makes for an elegant, coiffed but welcoming look for your guests. After all, comfort is key! 

Trims – go for it with trims. Adding piping, a fluffy fringe or some of the wonderful edging tapes and beads available really elevate a cushion, give it lots of interest and character and a little bit of luxury for your furnishings.
